Where to Go for Training as an Auto Mechanic and What Are Your Prospects?

Developing Mechanical Skills

Studying to become a mechanic is not an easy task. You have to be proficient not only with the theoretical part of the inner workings of most vehicles, but also with the practical aspect of actually repairing, tuning and maintaining vehicles to ensure they are operating at peak efficiency.

If you want to train to become an auto mechanic, you have a few important prerequisites to meet:

  1. First you need at least a high school diploma. In most cases, however, employees will prefer candidates who have at least postsecondary training. That could include working with oilfield fittings and other mechanical fittings and hoses, including knowledge about hydraulics.
  2. You will then need to enroll into a vocational education program either by attending a vocational school, going to a community college or going straight to one of the major car manufacturers to get your training completed.
  3. Obtain your main certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). This is the organization you have to go to for certifications relating to the specialized activities of auto mechanics, including engine restoration, as well as the ability to repair brake, electrical and steering systems.

Subsequent employer training will also be available depending on your first employer. Most companies will want to make sure you adhere to their job requirements and specifications, and that you work according to their regulations and special practices. Also, as you gain more experience, you can gradually become a master mechanic by becoming certified in all auto mechanic specialties supported by the ASE.
